Details

In June 1910, there was no separate White House Police Force yet. The responsibility for protecting the White House and the President fell to The U.S. Secret Service and The Metropolitan Police. At that time, the White House’s visible, uniformed protection detail came from the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, D.C., who were formally assigned to guard the Executive Mansion. They were often called “White House doormen” or “police officers on White House duty.” Their primary function was to control access to the building, watch the gates and entrances, and maintain order on the grounds.
