This is an original and authentic button from the 1860 campaign of Abraham Lincoln for President and Hannibal Hamlin for Vice President. This is a ferrotype style button. Around the rim it says "Lincoln Hamlin" on the front and reverse. The photo of President Lincoln was taken when Lincoln was beardless. A very fine example of an increasingly scarce button. Holed at the top for hanging as charm or pendants issued. One of the better condition buttons we have seen of this smaller size ferrotype button, with very clear photos of both candidates.
Historical Notes
A ferrotype, also known as a tintype, is a photograph made by creating a direct positive on a thin sheet of iron coated with a dark lacquer or enamel and used as the support for the photographic emulsion.
