Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens, original quote and handwritten signature. He quotes Alexander Pope's famous quote "An Essay on Man". Dated October 23, 1881- approximately two years before his death. After the end of hostilities Stephens was sent to prison and then was elected as a Congressman from the State of Georgia. Small card measuring 4" wide x 2 1/4" high. Attractively framed with four photos of Stephens, often considered one of the ugliest politicians due to his many illnesses. Nice piece and autograph. Original, of course. Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity from the auction house who originally sold the item before it was framed.
