1868 General Ulysses S Grant Hugues Bovy Campaign Medal. 1868 PThe medalist was Hugues Bovy There is an M Bovy hallmark on the bottom rim. This medal is bronze. The obverse shows a high relief bust of General U.S. Grant with his name sourrounding. At the bottom in small letters it reads (1868) Hugues Bovy Fecit Geneve Hugues Bovy Fecit GEneve Suisse. The reverse around the rim reads I Intend to Fight It Ourt On This Line If It Takes All Summer. In the center it reads Patient of Toil - Serene Amidst Alarms Inflixble in Faith Invincible in Arms. The I intend to fight quotation is taken from a well-known War Department dispatch sent by Grant on May 11, 1864 in which he described the combat in his compaign against Richmond with favorable expectations. The Patient of Toil is a quotation from the Scottish author, James Beattie. On the bottom rim is the inscription M Bovy. Original and one of the finest examples of this scarce medal that we have seen.
