Civil War Patriotic Cover – F. Kimmel Union Shield & Lady Liberty Allegory. An attractive Civil War patriotic cover engraved by F. Kimmel of New York depicting a female allegorical figure holding the American flag beside a shield inscribed "UNION," accompanied by an American eagle. The elaborate scrollwork and classical symbolism make this one of Kimmel's more decorative Union patriotic envelopes. Unused and original.

Rather than portraying a specific historical figure, this illustration uses an allegorical female figure—often interpreted as Columbia or Liberty—to symbolize the preservation of the Union. Throughout the Civil War, publishers employed patriotic imagery such as flags, eagles, shields, and classical female figures to inspire loyalty and national unity while avoiding overt political caricature.
