An unusual and attractive piece of Theodore Roosevelt campaign ephemera from the 1904 presidential election: the four-page menu for the Plymouth County Republican Campaign Banquet, held at the Hotel Pilgrim in Plymouth, Massachusetts, on Tuesday, September 6, 1904.
The front features an elaborate patriotic jugate engraving of President Theodore Roosevelt and his running mate Charles Warren Fairbanks, surrounded by American flags, an eagle, shield and the motto E Pluribus Unum. Their names appear beneath their respective portraits.
Inside is the elaborate banquet menu beneath the Hotel Pilgrim crest, offering a decidedly substantial turn-of-the-century dinner that included clam chowder, Penobscot salmon, spring chicken, roast young turkey, filet of beef, lobster salad, strawberry ice cream and more.
The program consists of four pages with deliberately scalloped/deckled edges. An appealing survivor from Roosevelt's successful 1904 campaign and an unusual combination of presidential campaign, Massachusetts political and historic hotel memorabilia. Original.
The September 6, 1904 banquet took place during Theodore Roosevelt's campaign for election to the presidency in his own right. Roosevelt had succeeded to the presidency following William McKinley's assassination in 1901 and was nominated by the Republicans in 1904 with Indiana Senator Charles W. Fairbanks as his running mate.
The banquet was held at Plymouth's Hotel Pilgrim, a prominent resort hotel overlooking Cape Cod Bay. The hotel had undergone a substantial renovation only the previous year and was a well-known location for banquets, civic gatherings and special events.
