1901 McKinley San Francisco Banquet Cancelled Due to First Lady Ida McKinley Illnesses. The health problems that plagued First Lady Ida McKinley are well documented and this cancelled event in San Francisco in May of 1901 was no exception. The event was eagerly awaited by citizens and dignitaries alike, was to host President McKinley and the First Lady. During this cross country trip that took place after McKinley's second term inauguration, Ida Saxton McKinley again suffered from various ailments including dysentery and infections that forced the cancellation of this event titled the "Citizen's Banquet to the President of the United States". Previously the First Lady had suffered from seizures and issues related to the death of her children at an early age. Original document.
This document was distributed to individuals that were scheduled to attend the event announcing the cancellation due to the illness of Mrs. McKinley. The McKinley's had arrived in San Francisco on May 12, 1901.
The document has the printed signature of A.A. Watkins, at the bottom and lists him as Chairman of the Banquet Committee. Watkins was Vice President of W.W. Montague & Co. and President and on the Executive Committee of the Employers' Association a "semi-secret" organization of employers who exercised significant control over its member firms and agreements between its members and local unions.
