1884 James G. Blaine & John A. Logan Presidential Campaign – Three Ohio Newspapers. Each promotes Republicans James G. Blaine of Maine for President and John A. Logan of Illinois for Vice President.
Published by The Journal of Bucyrus, Ohio, on August 1, August 8, and August 15, 1884, the three clippings prominently display the Republican presidential ticket along with candidates for important Ohio state and local offices.
The August 1 clipping includes the names of presidential electors and other Republican candidates, while the August 8 issue features a somewhat different arrangement of the party's candidates. Particularly interesting is the August 15 example, which includes an announcement of an upcoming Republican mass convention at Rowse Hall in Bucyrus, along with an appearance by General J. S. Robinson, Republican candidate for Ohio Secretary of State.
An attractive trio of 19th-century political newspaper artifacts illustrating how local newspapers promoted national presidential candidates while encouraging participation in state and county elections.
Offered as a set of three different dated clippings.
The presidential election of 1884 pitted Republican James G. Blaine and his running mate, Civil War General John A. Logan, against Democrats Grover Cleveland and Thomas A. Hendricks. The bitterly contested election ended with Cleveland winning the presidency by just 37 electoral votes. Interestingly, although Blaine lost nationally, he carried Ohio with approximately 51% of the popular vote.
