Civil War Patriotic Cover “Contraband Barricade – Come and Get Your Property”.

Original Civil War patriotic cover featuring the powerful and historically important slogan “Contraband barricade. Come and get your property.”

The illustration depicts African American troops and Union defenders behind a fortified barricade beneath American flags, reflecting one of the most significant developments of the Civil War era — the Union’s treatment of escaped enslaved people as “contraband of war.”

The phrase “contraband” emerged after Union General Benjamin Butler refused to return escaped enslaved individuals to Confederate owners, declaring them confiscated wartime property. This policy became an early and important step toward emancipation.

Printed along the left side is “New York Union Envelope Depot, 144 Broadway,” identifying the publisher and adding additional historical interest.

A striking and historically important Civil War cover touching directly upon emancipation, Union policy, and African American participation during the war.
