1864 John Brough Governor of Ohio Signed Appointment Certificate. Dated October Seventh 1864. Signed by the Governor and his Secretary of State, the document appoints C. L. Bushnell as the Justice of the peace for the Township of Jefferson in the County of Ashtabula. The reverse shows an embossed seal and essentially a notary type statement saying that Bushnell appeared before him and "made oath that he would suport the Constitution and the United States and this state..." which is noteworthy given that the Civil War was still raging on. With three Internal Revenue Express stamps affixed. Original
