Rare American Battle Monuments Association (ABMC) Special Presentation Archive. ABMC honors the services of overseas U.S. armed forces by maintaining and promoting America’s overseas commemorative cemeteries and memorials. This large heavy and well produced special binder was inscribed on the front cover to Joseph C. Duke, who was Sergeant at Arms from 1949-1953 and then again from 1955-1965.
A remarkable presentation album given to Joseph C. Duke (1907–1988), longtime Sergeant at Arms of the United States Senate (1949–53, 1955–65) and later Commissioner of the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC). The album contains 19 large-format lithographic prints (19" x 16.5") depicting America’s overseas military cemeteries and memorials, produced by the ABMC during the mid-20th century.
The volume is gilt-lettered with Duke’s name and “American Battle Monuments Commission” on the cover, underscoring its status as an official presentation piece. Such albums were prepared in very limited numbers for commissioners and dignitaries overseeing America’s overseas commemorations of its fallen service members. We have attached a few of the 19 lithographic prints so you get an idea of the images.
This binder not only reflects the ABMC’s mission of honoring U.S. war dead but also carries a direct association with a senior Senate officer and Kennedy–Johnson era commissioner. An impressive artifact combining American political history and military commemoration.
Joseph C. Duke served on the ABMC. The Commission’s own membership rolls list “Joseph C. Duke” as a commissioner during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations (1961–1969).
