Civil War Patriotic Cover “Remember Ellsworth!” Union Martyr Theme
Civil War patriotic cover featuring a colorful image of Union hero Colonel Elmer Ellsworth standing beside a large American flag with the rallying cry: “REMEMBER ELLSWORTH!” Printed in patriotic red and blue, this striking design commemorates one of the North’s earliest and most celebrated wartime martyrs.
Ellsworth’s death in 1861 electrified the North and inspired numerous patriotic songs, prints, and covers. His image quickly became a powerful symbol of Union sacrifice and determination during the opening months of the Civil War.
Original and unused.
From an amazing collection of patriotic Civil War historical covers we recently acquired in very fine condition that we will be offering in the weeks to come.
Colonel Elmer E. Ellsworth was killed in Alexandria, Virginia, in May 1861 after removing a Confederate flag from atop the Marshall House Inn. A close friend of Abraham Lincoln, Ellsworth became a national hero almost overnight, and “Remember Ellsworth!” emerged as an important Union patriotic slogan early in the war.
