Served four terms as a United States senator and he was the Democratic Party nominee for Vice President in 1988 on the Michael Dukakis ticket. Perhaps best known for his put down of Dan Quayle in the 1988 presidential debate: "Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy"
