The election is most notable for electing incumbent Governor Henry J. Gardner of the "Know Nothing" party, over the Republican, Democratic and White party candidates in Massachusetts. 32 pgs. Historical Notes

The "Know Nothing" party was a politicay party and movement active in the mid-1850s and later knowas simply as the "American Party". It was often accused of being a secret society and xenophobic.
