  7. Theodore Roosevelt jr letter

Theodore Roosevelt Jr Discussed a Potential Hoover Candidacy in 1935

    $450.00

Interesting historic letter from Theodore Roosevelt Jr, son of President Theodore Roosevelt. The letter was written in 1935 when Roosevelt was President of the National Republican Club. Theodore Roosevelt Jr was a Republican and there was no love between him and his cousin Franklin Delano Roosevelt who he hoped the Republicans would defeat in the upcoming election. The letter discussed the possibility that Herbert Hoover would again run for President in the 1936 election, in fact Roosevelt was to meet with Mr. Hoover that day. Hoover had been defeated by Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1933 election, but there were obviously some who felt Hoover should try again. The letter shows the luke warm support for Hoover to run again against Roosevelt, but also makes it clear how desperate the Republicans were to defeat FDR. In the letter Roosevelt says that he "Personally I am not only devoted to him but politically I am a great admirer of his clear-sighted, clear headed ability. Whether he should be a candidate again or not is another question." Roosevelt goes on to say " I believe that times are so desperate and the issue at stake so great that we must think simply in terms of the man who stands the most chance of beating President Roosevelt...." Interesting behind the scenes look into the political climate in 1935 when the Republicans were desperate to defeat his cousin Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the Presidential election. Signed by Roosevelt in ink. Learn More
