1860s Civil War Satirical Cover – “C.S.A. Alligator Rangers” Caricature. Civil War patriotic cover featuring a satirical depiction of a Confederate “Alligator Ranger,” shown as a ragged, intoxicated soldier carrying a whip, liquor bottle, and Confederate flag. The bold caricature mocks Southern claims of toughness, with the caption doubting his ability to make “Northern mudsills run.” A scarce and visually engaging Union propaganda design, with strong graphic appeal and excellent display presence.  Produced by D. Murphy's Son, N.Y. Unused and original.

Historical Notes

Patriotic covers were widely produced in the North during the Civil War as a form of political expression and propaganda, often using humor and exaggeration to ridicule the Confederacy . This design satirizes so-called Confederate “Alligator Rangers”—likely a fictional or exaggerated unit meant to evoke frontier toughness—by portraying the soldier as disheveled and ineffective. The reference to “Northern mudsills,” a Southern insult for laborers, is turned back on itself, reinforcing Union confidence and mocking Confederate bravado during the early years of the war.
