1898 Spanish American War & Battle of Manila Souvenir Spoons. 1) Flagship Olympia image with Battle of Manila, May 1 1898 and image of Commodore Dewey at the tip. 2) Image of the ship with eagle above, and text reads Feb 15th 1898 and March 9th and 50,000,000 for defense. The phrase “50,000,000 for defense” refers to a popular slogan from 1898, tied to the lead-up to the Spanish-American War.
In 1898, this phrase got a fresh wave of patriotic use specifically referring to Congress's emergency appropriation of $50 million in March 1898 to prepare for war with Spain. This was just before the formal declaration of war in April, following the sinking of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor.
