Adlai Stevenson clutchback campaign lapel pin from the 1950s -- Adlai's symbol was a shoe with a hole in the bottom, showing he was an ordinary kind of guy who could sympathize with every man's problems. The silver-colored shoe pins promoting Adlai Stevenson are significant because they were a unique campaign symbol used to portray him as a frugal, hardworking, and down-to-earth "man of the people". The pins were inspired by a famous Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph taken during his 1952 presidential campaign. Original.
Republicans initially tried to use the image of Stevenson's shoe as a way of mocking him and calling him a hobo or his presidency would lead to economic hardship. But Stevenson embraced the image showing his a thrifty and dedicated public servant.
