1883 Benjamin Butler for Massachusetts Governor Democratic Ticket. From Butler's unsuccessful 1883 run for Governor of Massachusetts. In 1884 butler launched his presidential campaign but was unsuccessful at gaining the Democratic nomination which went to Grover Cleveland. Butler was a controversial figure in Massachusetts politics. During his term as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives he was a key figure in the impeachment trial of then President Andrew Johnson.
