1908 William Taft "Billy Possum" Brass Clothing Button. Seeing a business opportunity, businesses s aimed to capitalize on this public knowledge to create a new, "next-big-thing" toy to succeed the Teddy Bear, which was named after Theodore Roosevelt. It was an absolute failure. The reverse of the button is a clasp where a thread or string would be inserted for attachment to clothing. Original.
Historical Notes
Despite the marketing, the campaign was a "massive flop". The toys were considered less cuddly and more repulsive than the teddy bear, and the craze died by Christmas of 1909.
