Advertising trade card issued by Durham's own Blackwell Durham Bull Tobacco Company in the 1870s. Blackwell appealed to both Democrats and Republicans, supporters, respectively, of Governor Samuel Jones Tilden of New York and President Ulysses Simpson Grant of Ohio. This item is a metamorphic card, one designed in some way to move and alter the image. When in the folded position the graphic appears to promote Tilden but when open it promotes Ulysses S. Grant. Original and very clever design.

Historical Notes

Tilden was narrowly defeated by Rutherford B. Hayes in 1876.
