This past month we were contacted by a very nice gentleman in the southeast part of the country, who has an absolutely huge collection of John F. Kennedy collectible souvenirs. When we say huge, we really mean it.
It literally takes over rooms of his home, cabinets, display units, boxes, binders etc. You can instantly tell the love and time that went into this collection.
Unfortunately, his family is not interested in continuing the "legacy" so he is interested in selling it.
But the challenge appears to be that while the collection may win an award for volume and weight, the majority of items are inexpensive mass produced souvenir type items. It includes, glasses, dishes, books, magazines etc. Like many other collections of its type, it includes dozens, perhaps hundreds, of copies of Life and Look magazines featuring President Kennedy on the cover, but printed in the millions.
And that's the problem. Since scarcity often drives price, no single item that we saw would individually sell for more than $20 or so and many for less than half of that.
So what do we tell the owner? Surely, based on the years of love and attention that went into this collection it should be worth a small fortune - but its not. And the fact that so many items are fragile in nature (like glasses and dishes), the prospect of shipping them cross country make it still more difficult to sell.
So we told him the truth. That, the love he put into collecting the items would likely not translate to a significant contribution to his estate. It's sad when we have to deliver such news, but its far better for everyone for us to be brutally honest even if it is the toughest part of our "job".
However, we did tell him that if we could find someone that lived in the Southeast U.S. that was interested in a truly amazing collection of souvenir items, that we would put them in contact with him. Therefore, if you are a collector or dealer that might have an interest in this collection, please email us at [email protected], and we'd be happy to introduce you.
What Do You Say When Volume Doesn't Translate to Value?
