Theodore Roosevelt's 1912 Presidential campaign button. Roosevelt and his supporters broke off after he lost the Republican nomination and he ran for the top job as an independent. The Bull Moose became the progressive party mascot after TR was asked how he felt at his age, especially after his extensive trip in Africa, and he quipped that he felt as strong as a bull moose. Roosevelt ran as a third party candidate in 1912 after he lost the Republican Party nomination for President to William H. Taft.
