Truly unique and very displayable photograph of Joe Duke, the Senate Sergeant at Arms from 1949-1953 and 1955 -1965. Photograph signed by hand by Everett M. Dirksen U.S. Senator from Illinois to Joe Duke. We believe this was part of a farewell celebration for Duke as he left the Senate. Duke served as the Sergeant At Arms of the Senate during the administrations of Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John F Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson The photo features a framed photo of the Senate in session. From right to left, Senator Everett Dirksen, Joe Duke, someone who is yet unidentifed and Mike Mansfield on the extreme left, Senate Majority leader Mike Mansfield of Montana. A special thanks to several American Political Items Collectors association who helped identify 3 of the 4 in the photo. Original. This is part of a collection of items we acquired from the estate of Joe Duke, obviously one-of-a-kind and a nice piece of senate history.
Historical Notes
Joe Duke: “He operates from the shadows.” In 1961, one writer noted that although Senate Sergeant at Arms Joe Duke “escorts presidents, walks with kings, and keeps current with clerks, he is generally inconspicuous.
