Civil War Cartoon Cover "The Way the Southern Loan Was Taken". Scarce Civil War patriotic caricature showing a confrontational scene above the caption "The way the Southern Loan was taken." An interesting financial and political satire aimed at Confederate fundraising efforts. A less commonly encountered subject among patriotic covers. Unused and original.
From the large collection of historical Civil War covers we recently acquired in very fine condition.
This political cartoon references Confederate efforts to raise money through government loans and bond issues. Union publishers frequently mocked Southern finances, portraying Confederate borrowing as coercive or desperate. Financial warfare was a significant part of the conflict as both sides struggled to fund military operations.
