1860s Civil War "Root or Die" Succession Union Cover. Another impressive illustration. The image uses a rattlesnake—long a symbol of American resistance—to warn that secession threatens the nation’s survival. “Root or Die” declares loyalty to the Union as the only path forward, while “Secession” is shown crushed, suggesting disunion leads to destruction and national death Original and Unused.
From the collection of Civil War patriotic covers in very fine condition that we recently acquired.
Produced during the early years of the American Civil War, this patriotic cover reflects Northern propaganda emphasizing preservation of the Union. Printers used bold animal symbolism, flags, and short slogans to spread pro-Union sentiment through everyday mail, turning correspondence into a vehicle for political messaging and morale.
