1860s Civil War "The Union Game Cock & Secession Shanghae Cover. A rooster with a Union flag, representing the Union army facing off against a chicken with a piracy flag. The U.S. Capitol building is in the far distance. Blue and red ink on ivory envelope. Rarely seen version, original and unused.
Printers used bold animal symbolism, flags and short slogans to spread pro-Union sentiment through everyday mail, turning correspondence into a vehicle for political messaging and morale.
