Historical Notes

One of the more memorable anti-Confederate designs of the Civil War, this envelope depicts a skull-and-crossbones flag labeled "J.D. His Marque." The initials almost certainly refer to Confederate President Jefferson Davis. The pirate-style imagery portrays the Confederacy as lawless and dangerous, a theme frequently employed by Union propagandists.
