Striking Civil War patriotic cover featuring a skull-and-crossbones flag labeled "J.D. His Marque." Civil War patriotic cover depicting a stylized shield captioned "The Emblem of the South." A simple but visually appealing symbolic Confederate-themed design that reflects the graphic style of many wartime patriotic envelopes. Unused and original.
Part of the large collection of Civil War historical covers that we recently acquired.
This patriotic caricature reduces the Confederacy to a simple shield bearing stars above red and white vertical bars. Northern publishers often created symbolic designs that condensed political arguments into instantly recognizable visual imagery. The caption leaves little doubt that the shield was intended as a representation of the South.
