Historical Notes

Jefferson Davis was commonly referred to as "Jeff Davis" during the Civil War as a shortened, familiar, and sometimes derogatory nickname. While he disliked the nickname personally, it was used by both supporters and detractors to refer to the President of the Confederate States of America.
