1888 Cleveland Thurman Matching Style Campaign Advertising Cards. The front of the trade cards feature striking images of Grover Cleveland and Allen Thurman with two flags a shield and eagle images. Interesting, at the bottom of the card it says "Who will be our Next President" and encourages the reader to turn the card over. On the reverse it explains that no matter who wins the election, the correct answer is "the best place to purchase Harness, Trunks and Bags is at Moffett & Allens" in Watertown, New York. Of course its also interesting to note, that the question at the bottom of the card "Who will be our Next President" is odd since Thurman ran as Cleveland's vice presidential running mate - not against him. Original.

Historical Notes

Allen G. Thurman did not run for President in 1888; rather, he was a candidate for Vice President. In the 1888 United States presidential election, Thurman was the Democratic nominee for Vice President, running alongside the presidential candidate Grover Cleveland. Cleveland, who was running for re-election, and Thurman ultimately lost to the Republican ticket of Benjamin Harrison and Levi P. Morton. Thurman, a respected senator and jurist, was selected to balance the ticket with the incumbent President Cleveland, but they were unsuccessful in their bid for election.
