Civil War Satirical Cover “Jeff’s Knave-y” Jefferson Davis Boat Cartoon. lA wonderfully sharp Civil War satirical cover titled “Jeff’s Knave-y,” taking direct aim at Jefferson Davis and the Confederate navy. The finely drawn cartoon depicts a comically ill-equipped crew crowded into a bowl-shaped boat beneath a skull-and-crossbones flag, paired with the classic Gotham rhyme: “Seven wise men of Gotham went to sea in a bowl.” The clever wordplay (“Knave-y”) and literary reference combine to portray Confederate leadership as both misguided and untrustworthy. Signed “Hoyt,” this is an appealing and thought-provoking example of Union-era humor and political commentary. Unused and original.

From a large collection of Civil War covers and memorabilia we recently acquired.

Historical Notes

This cover uses humor and literary reference to criticize Jefferson Davis and the Confederate navy. The phrase “Seven wise men of Gotham went to sea in a bowl” comes from an English nursery rhyme about foolish men undertaking a doomed voyage. By pairing this with the pun “Knave-y” (instead of Navy), the artist portrays Confederate leadership as both dishonest and incompetent. Such satirical covers were popular in the North, offering both propaganda and entertainment during the Civil War.
