"He who noteth even the fall of a sparrow will have some purpose even in the fate of one like me" - Ellsworth. Ellsworth was the first Union officer killed int he Civil war and his death made him nan instant martyr. Unused and original.
From a large collection of Civil War covers and memorabilia we recently acquired.
As the first Union officer killed in the Civil War, Colonel Elmer Ellsworth’s 1861 death made him an instant martyr. His killing spurred massive Union recruitment, galvanized Northern patriotism, and provided a powerful rallying cry, "Remember Ellsworth," escalating the war's intensity.
