While the figure may represent Columbia, the traditional personification of the United States, no identifying attributes are present and the precise identity remains uncertain Unused and original.
From an amazingly large collection of Civil War covers in very fine condition.
Before the widespread adoption of Uncle Sam as America's primary national symbol, Columbia frequently appeared in political cartoons, patriotic art, and Civil War stationery. Derived from classical imagery, she embodied the ideals of liberty, national honor, and the preservation of the Union. Envelopes featuring Columbia were popular throughout the war as symbolic reminders of the nation for which Union soldiers fought
