Published in 1969, David Douglas Duncan’s Self-Portrait: U.S.A. is a powerful photographic chronicle of the turbulent 1968 presidential election. Its 325 black-and-white photographs document the Republican Convention in Miami Beach and Democratic Convention in Chicago, capturing candidates, delegates, protesters, police, wounded veterans, and political unrest. Massive 242 page book plus cover.
David Douglas Duncan had recently returned from photographing the Vietnam War when he covered the 1968 presidential conventions. Turning his camera from combat overseas to political conflict at home, Duncan documented an America deeply divided by Vietnam, racial tensions, antiwar protests, and a tumultuous presidential election.
