This is an original Chicago Daily Tribune newspaper from November 3, 1948.  While this edition may not have the same cachet as its sister edition the iconic "Dewey Defeats Truman" headline, published on the same day, it is more difficult to find than its famous sister edition. We are on a quest to find each of the various editions published that day by the Tribune, whose editors scrambled to predict a Dewey win and then began to hedge their bet in later editions.

The headline of this edition reads "Dewey Ahead" Race Close Democrats Winning State". You can hear the newspaper people screaming "Stop the Presses".

This edition hedges the newspapers bet in the headline. Rather than saying categorically that Dewey defeated Truman, instead it says he is now "ahead" However, in their rush to print, the article in the extreme right side column says "Dewey and Warren won the Presidential eleciton yesterday by a large majority of Electoral votes."

Interesting, both this edition and the Dewey Defeats Truman edition, both say FINAL in the upper right corner. We guess final doesn't always mean final!

For those collectors who strive to collect every version (edition) of the newspaper published by the Chicago Daily Tribune this day, here's your chance to add another to your collection.

Historical Notes

This later addition is extremely hard to find but is not as well known as the famous "Dewey Defeats Truman" headline. Actually, this is only the first copy of this particular day's edition we have owned in the past 43 years.
