Historical Notes

The Exeter UFO Festival commemorates one of America’s most famous close-encounter cases—the 1965 “Incident at Exeter.” In the early hours of September 3, 1965, teenager Norman Muscarello reported seeing a large, brightly lit craft hovering near Route 150 outside Exeter, New Hampshire. Local police officers responded and later stated they witnessed a similar object with flashing red lights moving silently through the sky. The case drew national attention and was investigated by the U.S. Air Force under Project Blue Book. Today, Exeter embraces its place in UFO lore with an annual festival celebrating the mystery, the witnesses, and the town’s unique role in modern American UFO history.
