Historical Notes

Publisher Frederick Kimmel of New York City was one of the many entrepreneurs who produced patriotic envelopes during the Civil War. His Nassau Street imprint appears on a variety of Union-themed designs that helped rally support for the Northern war effort. The prominent "UNION" flag depicted on these envelopes reflected one of the central messages of the era: preservation of the United States as a single nation.
