Not often seen badge from the 1916 Republican National Convention. It appears to be a partial badge with a short red ribbon suspending a medal with a torch on top of a large eagle with upturned wings with a red enameled plaque reading Republican National Convention 1916. This eagle design is unusual. The badge does not have a pin the on reverse so it was stapled at the top (which can be easily removed leaving two small pinholes. Original.

Historical Notes

During the 1916 Republican National Convention, which was held in Chicago, Illinois, the incumbent President William Howard Taft and former President Theodore Roosevelt were both vying for the nomination. In a controversial move, Roosevelt's supporters challenged the seating of delegates from several states, leading to a heated debate on the convention floor. When the convention chairman ruled against Roosevelt's supporters, they stormed out of the convention and held a competing convention, which nominated Roosevelt as the candidate for the newly-formed Progressive Party. This split in the Republican Party contributed to the eventual victory of Democrat Woodrow Wilson in the general election.
