Civil War Patriotic Cover – Flag of the Free – Colorful American Flag & Patriotic Poem. Civil War-era patriotic envelope featuring a large, flowing American flag printed in red and blue, accompanied by a lengthy patriotic poem beginning:

"Flag of the free heart's hope and home,
By angel hands to valor given,
Thy stars have lit the welkin dome,
And all thy hues were born in heaven."

The poem continues with a stirring tribute to freedom and the American flag, concluding with the declaration that freedom's banner will continue to fly.

An especially appealing example of Civil War patriotic stationery, combining a colorful flag illustration with an extended patriotic verse. Unused, with attractive age toning and minor scattered spotting. Unused and original.

From a collection of original Civil War patriotic covers we recently acquired.

Historical Notes

The verse is from "The American Flag," a celebrated patriotic poem written by Joseph Rodman Drake in 1819. Its stirring tribute to the American flag remained popular throughout the nineteenth century and took on renewed significance during the Civil War. Printers frequently incorporated patriotic poetry into illustrated envelopes to express loyalty to the Union and celebrate the nation's ideals
