1883 Civil War General W.T. Sherman Handwritten & Signed Inviting President Chester A Arthur To Dinner Meeting. Not often do we come across a handwritten letter from a General inviting his "boss" the President of the United States, to dinner at his personal residence. The letter, which is personally written and signed by Sherman' on his official lined paper  and printed with the "Headquarters Army of the United States" designation at the top, is dated February 5, 1883 and invites U.S. President Chester A. Arthur to dinner. During his life as Commanding General of the U.S. Army, William Tecumseh Sherman who is often credited as the first "modern" General, served under four Presidents (Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, James A Garfield, and Chester A Arthur. There isa notation at the top left corner that the invitation was accepted.  Interestingly, it was later that same year that Sherman stepped down as commanding general. Original letter with signature of Sherman comes with a PSA/DNA Letter of Authenticity.

The letter is has been professionally matted and framed and surrounded by engravings of Ulysses S. Grant (and General W.T. Sherman. Very attractive and likley unique historical item.

From the collection of an avid fifty-year collector on the East Coast who is a descendant of the family of Herbert Hoover.

Historical Notes

In 1869 when Ulysses S. Grant became President, Sherman succeeded Grant as the Commanding General of the Army.   He was sometimes criticized for his "scorched-earth policies" against the Confederacy.  Sherman's most famount moment came during his Atlanta campaign and the classic "Sherman's March to the Sea, in which he decimated Georgia and the Confederacy war efforts.
