General Winfield Scott Exquisite Vintage Chromatography Print Mounted On Canvas. Dramatic and almost breathtaking presentation shows the General with his horse and sword. Winfield Scott was the Whig Party presidential candidate in 1852 but lost the election to Millard Fillmore. As General the served in the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War and at the beginning of the Civil War. The print was mounted on canvas and produced by chromatography from the original black and white print design. After much effort we were finally  able to locate the exact design in the archive of the  National Gallery of Art / Smithsonian. They date the original as 1848. It is mounted on canvas and was framed at one time based on the outer edges of the canvas that extend beyond the print and have mounting or stretching holes that do not touch the design. While this print is obviously not the original, the incredible vintage chromatography method used at one time in its history, gives it the dramatic look of an oil painting that is aching to be framed and once framed will no doubt be a centerpiece of any room or collection. We have included several different photographs including one showing how the piece without the canvas backing and the reverse.

Historical Notes

Chromatography in art separates colors like a rainbow. Artists mix colors to make new ones. Chromatography helps reproduce these mixes accurately in prints. It's like a color recipe for printers, ensuring pictures look just right, like turning a black and white photo into a colorful masterpiece. We do not know the exact date of this piece.
