"Why Don't You Take It?" Scott Challenges Jefferson Davis Civil War Cover. Civil War patriotic cover featuring a striking political cartoon of General Winfield Scott and Confederate President Jefferson Davis portrayed as opposing dogs. The illustration includes the caption "Why don't you take it?" and a symbolic reference to Washington. An appealing and uncommon example of Civil War political satire. Unused and original.
From the huge collection of Civil War covers in very fine condition that we recently acquired.
This humorous Civil War patriotic cover uses animal caricatures to depict Union General Winfield Scott and Confederate President Jefferson Davis. The broken object marked "Washington" symbolizes the Confederate desire to capture the nation's capital. Scott's sarcastic challenge, "Why don't you take it?" reflected Northern confidence that Washington would remain secure despite early Confederate threats.
