Rare Newsweek Bush Gore America's Closest Craziest Election Gift Display

Conversation pieces do not get much better than this! In the year 2000, the Republican candiate George Bush and Democratic candidate Al Gore were fighting what Newsweek magazine called "America's Closest, Craziest Election" as Americans waited for the decision on who would become the nation's next President. At press time for the November 20, 2000 issue of Newsweek magazine, the courts had still not ruled on who actually won the election, with the decision hanging on the now infamous "hanging chads".

As the press deadline approached, unsure of the outcome, Newsweek magazine staff hurridly produced several different covers for their next issue. Including, ones that proclaimed "President Bush - How He Did It", another for "President Gore - How He Did It" and two different "split decision" covers. Eventually, with the court's decision not coming until week later, Newsweek decided to run with its now famous split portrait on the cover with half the photo showing the face of Bush and half showing the face of Gore.

This limited edition and original proof plaque was presented to members of the Newsweek production staff in appreciation of the tough 28+ hour days they spent preparing alternative issues and covers. This plaque comes directly from one of the production managers members of Newsweek. The heavy laminated wooden plaques include proof copies of the rarely seen front covers of both versions of the magazines.
