Historical Notes

On March 21, 1990, President George H.W. Bush hosted a state dinner at the White House in honor of the newly-elected Prime Minister of Poland, Tadeusz Mazowiecki. The dinner marked the first time a Polish head of state had been invited to the White House, symbolizing the new era of democracy in Poland.
