1888 Grover Cleveland Campaign Fabric Stud Button with Horseshoe Design
1888 Grover Cleveland Campaign Fabric Stud Button with Horseshoe Design
1888 Grover Cleveland presidential campaign stud button featuring the candidate's name boldly displayed across a blue horseshoe, traditionally a symbol of good luck. The design is executed on a textured fabric surface in red, white and blue, giving this diminutive campaign piece a particularly appealing period appearance.
Produced for Cleveland's unsuccessful 1888 reelection campaign with Democratic vice-presidential nominee Allen G. Thurman. Horseshoe designs were a popular decorative and good-luck motif in late 19th-century political campaign jewelry, and documented Cleveland horseshoe campaign pieces from 1888 are known.
A charming and not often seen variation of early Cleveland campaign memorabilia, especially appealing for its colorful fabric construction and simple, graphic design. Not often seen. Original, of course.
In 1888, incumbent President Grover Cleveland and running mate Allen G. Thurman faced Republicans Benjamin Harrison and Levi P. Morton. Cleveland actually received more popular votes nationwide, but Harrison prevailed in the Electoral College.
