Historical Notes

Benjamin Harrison and Levi P. Morton ran a successful Republican campaign in 1888, defeating incumbent Grover Cleveland. Emphasizing protective tariffs and veterans’ pensions, they gained strong support in industrial states. Harrison lost the popular vote but won the Electoral College, becoming the 23rd U.S. president.
