Benjamin Harrison’s 1889 inauguration deliberately echoed George Washington’s first inauguration a century earlier. Marking the constitutional centennial, Harrison took the oath on March 4, 1889, before an enormous crowd, emphasizing continuity of the republic. Centennial events and symbolism honored Washington while underscoring America’s endurance, unity, and orderly transfer of presidential power after one hundred years.
