Civil War Patriotic Cover “Our Hearts Are With Them” – Homefront Woman at Lamp – Union Sentiment. Original Civil War patriotic cover featuring a touching homefront scene of a woman seated by lamplight, likely reading or writing to a loved one serving in the war. The simple yet powerful caption, “Our hearts are with them,” reflects the emotional connection between civilians and soldiers during the conflict.
Printed in red ink, this design captures the quieter, more personal side of wartime patriotism—far removed from battlefield imagery, yet equally compelling. A scarce and evocative example of Union-era sentimental propaganda.

From a large collection of very fine Civil War covers and memorabilia we recently acquired.
During the Civil War, Northern propaganda often used dark humor and stark imagery to portray Confederates as traitors deserving punishment. The use of hemp—commonly associated with rope—was a direct reference to hanging, a powerful and widely understood symbol at the time.
