The clever political caricature ridicules Confederate hopes of capturing the Union capital before reversing into reluctant resignation. A wonderful example of Civil War political humor. Many Northern envelopes ridiculed Confederate leaders through satire rather than military scenes. This design reflects the widespread belief that Jefferson Davis dreamed of taking Washington early in the war, only to find the city too heavily defended.
